OT Spring Bulbs

We’ve had some nice’ish days in Seattle this week - still cool, but some blips of sun! I popped out yesterday and poked under my bird netting to collect a photo of my first Narcissus blooms. Just the tiniest little buttery yellow confections, how delicious they are. This is the first year I’ve ever planted Narcissus and tulips and I’m getting pretty pumped for early blooms! (Please ignore our neighbor’s chain link fence, it’s an eyesore but at the same time, I kind of appreciate the Central District vibe)

Ha I do too! When everything goes on clearance in November I put them in my raised beds I use for tomatoes etc - for the LIFE of me I cannot get tulips to grow in pots - they always rot or wither or something- when I shove them in the tomatoes/veg raised beds they do great

My problem with tulips is that the squirrels cleaned every one of them out of the crates I had planted them in! The crates of daffodils and hyacinths are fine. The tulips no longer exist. I have never had squirrel problems before but I have a border of old gnarled pines on one side and a border of mixed evergreens along the creek on the other and the squirrels run back and forth across the yard between them.

calico20hill I am in the same boat - the squirrel digging wipes everything out! I've found that bird netting successfully prevents both the squirrels and the birds from my raised beds. Pots are unfortunately on their own. Thankfully, my lilies withstand the voracious digging as they tolerate such deep planting. I'm not sure which is worse, combatting against perils from above or below? I imagine if/when we can move to a larger space of land, I'll be combatting voles, etc. too!
