I have heard of the relative growing the seed dahlias stories for years and Phil Mingus had at least one location. One problem is that the person agreeing to the project may not be the one that picks all the flowers or takes off those ugly spent blooms. My mother did it once for us and there were no seeds as all the flowers were picked. And it was the people who helped her take care of the yard.
I visited a famous hybridizer's garden as part of a tour. I felt like he was sitting in his rocking chair with his shotgun on his lap guarding those huge seed pods on the giant dahlias. One false move and I would have been dead meat. I am obviously exaggerating but I did see him chastise some people who got close to them.
