Krista I took some cuttings on 9/3/25 of a few seedlings and a couple named varieties. They were placed in yogurt cups, and located in a large clear plastic tub that was placed under a tree that provided shade. Many of those cuttings rooted nicely and thanks to the mild winter(zone 9b ) I had enough growth for me to make cuttings from on Jan 16 2026. I placed the cuttings in sealed clear plastic bins, with grow lights and heat mats in my garage. I used thermometer regulated heat mats, set at a temp of 74 degrees F. In addition, I monitored the internal temperature of the bins because the grow lights I used are heat producing. By monitoring the temperature of the inside of the bins, I could raise the lights until the temperature was acceptable, no warmer than 78-80. It's Feb 12th, and most all the cuttings have rooted nicely. I did use a little rooting hormone.
Today is their first day of sunshine. This is one of the bins.
Sometimes I use coffee creamer caps as a rooting vessel for the smaller cuttings. I like being able to open up the bottom to see if roots are developed.
25-38-01 - I'm looking forward to testing the vase life of this second year seedling.
