My wife Margaret accused me of taking too many cuttings this year. She has a point and even though most of them were of things we both needed or wanted, they take lots of our time as they are high maintenance plants. I am going to have do better keeping records of what cuttings have been taken. She likes to ask: How many cuttings do you have of Hollyhill Margaret's Jewell? Of course, I remember taking quite a few but the exact number is always unknown until I sort the cuttings by name.
It not good enough to say to yourself, "Wow, that one is a really nice variety and a couple of extra cuttings would be good." Another issue for us as breeders is that we have an entire batch of first year seedlings competing for greenhouse space with the cuttings. We had over 30 flats of seedlings and I am about 60% done planting the first year seedlings. Planting seedlings and planting cuttings are activities that compete with each other.
