I do not dig up clumps when the soil is wet. If both climate and soil conditions cooperate, digging clumps with only a little dry soil enables me to skip washing off the clumps before dividing. I find they store better without a "bath". Maybe the slight soil coating serves as a protective coating for their winter sleep?

BarryO just in the last few days I’ve noticed the tubers I washed off & divided some are cracking (less than 24 hours from the time I washed them off) vs the tubers I kept the dirt on and just divided have nearly no cracking. As silly as it sounds I am washing off the ones I plan to give away for fear of people judging me for giving them a “dirty” tuber. Once they are more dry most of the dirt brushed off so easy anyways

I am about 60% done dividing tuber clumps. The last 40% is more difficult due to motivation issues. Sitting in the garage in front of the old TV (the one that used to be in the bedroom 15 years ago) and watching Judge Judy can get pretty old. My attention span for dividing is about 3 -4 hours at a time.

I’m also only about 60% done dividing. I dug later than ever before, and the Tday interruption really made it hard to go back to what I think of as end-of-summer duties. I’d like to finish before Christmas but I’ve been distracting myself on purpose with other things like seed ordering, and peonies are marked down, 50% off at our local peony farm and I’m trying not to order them!

Krista wow! It looks like Daffy did much better for you than for me! Both of my plants ended up being completely open centered and generally underwhelming. Yours looks super cool!

It was kind of rough weather here all season and I had a lot of plants go open centered - even a few that have been pretty reliable in the past.

Juliarugula I was very pleased with how well Daffy did. It was planted in a spot that received partial afternoon shade which may have helped in my dry, heat. The centers stayed nice and tight even as days shortened and temps became cooler in the fall, opening only when the bloom became overripe. I wanted this one to do well and planted it intentionally in a place with a little protection. Maybe try a little shade next year if you’ve got a spot with some?

Dividing some each day. I am about 60% done . I always find some surprises. Seedling 23 52 is an excellent cut flower. It is about 4 inches in diameter and the vigorous plants are 6 feet tall. And it makes lots of nice tubers.
