When I went to the field to check on my tomato plants today I found a pile of empty organza bags sitting next to my most valuable heirloom variety. I assume it was a raccoon that had completely stripped every (about 30) green tomato from the 6 plants including all of the tomatoes "protected' within the organza bags.
I have some peppermint oil and (extremely) hot peppers so my immediate plan is to soak the organza bags in peppermint oil and include a hot pepper in each organza bag when I cover the next crop of green tomatoes.
Does anyone have experience successfully deterring raccoons long term? I am especially wondering about the effectiveness of the ultrasonic deterrents. Shooting or trapping are not options I will consider. Thanks!
