100F here in Oregon today and forecast is same or hotter tomorrow. Dahlia maintenance is at stands
till and watering is all we are doing.

Teddahlia same here and the watering is all done on a timer...I did run out very early this morning to pick more for the house where I could enjoy them inside.

Same here. I did not even go out there today. The water is on automatic , the ducks do the weeding...I can wait this out...inside with the AC... I have vases of flowers in the house sharing the AC with me

Today it is supposed to be 100F again. The low last night was 65F. The daylight this late in the summer is declining and the hot temps are over a shorter timespan. We opened the windows in the bedroom at about 3AM(70F)
as we like the fresh air if it is not too hot.

Seedling kept for a year and likely no more.

Pretty much the same here. I am interested in the clouds that are blowing in from the west....hoping they will stay around to shield us from some of the heat. I just came in from the garden with a load of blossoms to be enjoyed while stuck inside with the AC, It wasn't too bad out there yet.

calico20hill NOw 101 degrees here. So much better for the dahlias when they have enough growth to shade the soil, unlike a few years ago when we had major heat before they had grown to size! I just went out and checked things in the rest of he garden and discovered our pear tree with almost ripe pears was wilting,,, We moved the mini- sprinkler to the other side f the tree and set it to run again. The clay soil holds the water well but it doesn't spread out as much as it would in better soil.

You might shiver if you visited our area😀 in central WI we’ve got a high of 61F and the forecast shows a low of 40F for Monday. For us it’s pleasant and I would rather take the cool weather than the heat but then I am envious of your longer growing season. If we are lucky our killing frost will hold off till mid September but I remember years it hit us the last days of August.

Dahlias for a lot of people in my area did poorly this year. Mostly weather related but I do need to do a soil test and see what I can do to improve soil health for growing.

Our best part of the season for growing dahlias begins in September and extends into October. Flowers have lots of color and good form and for we breeders, it is seed gathering time. If it does not rain too much in mid October , the flowers can be nice for an extra week or two. We dig in late October and they are a sorry sight in November but generally no frost until Thanksgiving although Halloween may have frost but not recently. About 20 years ago it did frost in mid September in Vancouver, Washington(25 miles away) where Phil Mingus(he grew dahlias for 71 years) grew his flowers. No frost here but he was happy to finish his digging season early and went hunting with his good friend Bill Mishler. The Portland dahlia show is October 4-5 this year.

Ted, I love your dahlia knowledge and stories! - and of course, pictures of your gorgeous dahlias. Will try to never complain about the measly 80s here in NW Wa state on this island. 90 rarely happens. But one year it went up to 100 degrees with high humidity on July 4. I'm from Phila. area and loved the steamy hot humid summers there in my youth. I felt homesick but happy to see that high humid temperature, put on my wide brimmed straw hat and a gallon of water, and went to a garden job in a lovely dahlia patch that day and enjoyed sweating and drinking and watering - and the shade of the dahlia plants.

It would be different if it were a regular occurrence as it seems to be now in the west. (and many other places.)
Condolences to all of you who live in hot dry heat. One would need automatic timed watering there. Hoping the heat wave breaks soon and you all stay safe and hydrated.

Teddahlia "Only" 91 degrees at 1 PM. Clouds coming in from the west. I made it outside for a quick garden check this morning...it was hot and humid but not particularily damaging to the plants. Lots of seed heads forming now so as soon as it cools I will be out there hanging marking tape with their ID's on them.

Wow! It's a high of 71 here in MI and the 7 day forecast show pretty much all highs in the liw to mid 70s and lows upper 40s and 50s. What a relief for the dahlias and the dahlia growers. I have all the windows open and was able to do some baking today without fear of making the house too hot. Pound cake to go with the strawberries my garden is suddenly producing again with the favorable weather. It's currently being guarded by my very first Hollyhill Moonsong bloom that I cut early because of wind. It's very easy on the eyes.

Weather forecast is for 2 more days until the weather drops back to normal. Each day is a couple of degrees cooler but I can hardly wait for an actual cool day, when I can work as long as I want outside. I'm glad we are almost into September .

calico20hill 83F at 3pm here. So, it finally is cool enough to do something and I have a doctors appointment.

And we are still doing 90's here...94 today. That is too hot for me out in the garden. Lower 80's is my limit. Ah well, it is giving some time for my wrist strain to heal. Wearing a splint helps with that but wrist splint gets a bit hot. I am really looking forward to some nice September days. I would love to spend more time in my garden with my lawn chair and notebook...so many seedlings to record this year!

Now at 95. Weather doesn't show any more temps this high for Sept or the rest of Aug so hope this is the last day of this.

92F here, 30 miles from you. Yesterday it did not get to 90 and was about 86F. Cooler weather is on the horizon.
