calico20hill I get a bit over the top when it comes to making sure nothing is unlabeled or labels stay clear.
What I do when labeling things is 1. Labeling the plant tag with sharpie permanent marker 2. put a piece of blue painters tape over the area I wrote on the plant tag and then label again writing on top of the painters tape…..I probably grow very few plants compared to many on here so it isn’t too time consuming for me.
I do this with pots:
I use painters tape on the side of the pot and write on it, then stick another piece of painters tape over it and write on that. I always stick my labels kinda up under the lip of the pot (see pic) so in theory it’s a bit more protected from water/sun. I will also stick a plant tag in the pot so I can see it easily. The double tape is just the backup for the pots.
I have had good luck so far with flagging tape not fading. Flagging tape on handle of a grow bag from June last year is still easy to read this year.
I had a pack of masking tape in 8 different colors I used that to kinda color code or categorize many bulbs I started in pots (tulips, anemones, Lilly, etc). Just like a yellow stripe on the pot so at a glance I knew what it was…yellow = tulips or pink = Lilly, etc. I may do something like this next year for seed parents.
Blue painters tape +sharpie as labels I have good results with. I see dahlias I planted last year in May 2024 with the blue painters tape still on the pot clear and easy to read. It might depend how much water gets on them. I always try to position my tags ideally so it’s out of where the water will hit the plant
