Bessie I don't think I have thrips, but I see curly petals on double varieties that are not successfully fully double. I don't think I've seen any centers tightly covered with rows of curly petals Or entire blooms made of curly petals. It would be interesting to know the mechanism.
I just watched a presentation on 'rewilding' with native plants and they were surprisingly genial about earwigs. Not so much invasive slugs and snails.

blown_dry I’ve been very relaxed about earwigs historically until this year. In our last garden I’d only catch one scampering around occasional, and I felt they could stay and keep the balance. This year in the new space I feel entirely differently due to sheer volume. They’ve turned me into an earwig demon hunter and they die on the spot! Apologies for my language to any tender souls reading.

My duck buddies are really good at keeping the earwig population down. Of course that only works as high as ducks beaks can reach, but if they keep them down in the garden a lot fewer make it up the stem.

GalenaB Beautiful! And I love the use of thumb for scale 😂 I have used clippers for scale before, since in theory I could go back and measure my clippers to the point on the photo.

Bessie Some of my “reject seedlings” my MIL rescued and planted at her house last year. This year seeing them blooming at her house they are looking way better! I think it could be that they are in a better location and better soil at her house vs the part sun/sink pot situation they had to endure last year with me.

Changes from start of season (bottom) to now. Initially it had red halfway down the reverse of petal, now that’s barely noticeable. Front of petal was solid yellow. Center wasn’t good but the initial color pattern was interesting/fun to me

Hollyhill Art W. was introduced in about 2010. It's namesake told me it was shown to a higher award in a show this year. It also won a blue ribbon in another show. So, it should be in the classification book next year. It is one of those easy to grow flowers that has really bright colors although it is only 6 feet tall.

Didn’t keep. I just thought it was such an oddball seedling, because it’s a waterlilly-ish in the front and a single in the back. And of course everyone’s favorite color combo red and yellow…..

This one didn’t bloom till mid October so keeping it because I liked the vivid color…..and I’m new at this. Maybe I will let my MIL grow it in her patch of my reject dahlia seedlings

This one I’m also keeping against my better judgement because I like the color 🙈 seedling of creamy ….I will have to report back how these “maybes” pan out for me 😅

Love the cupped petal look. Won’t win at any shows but it has won a place in my garden !

Working through cataloging photos with all the rain we're getting in Washington right now. Came across this one from 2025: it was 4 - 5 inches. I'm hoping the notches in some of the petal tips go away next year, but we'll see.

In a way, a picture does not show what a flower is really like in the garden. We probably would not share this picture if the plant were not healthy and productive. Over the years, we have flowers that we keep because they are so reliable. They have "nice" flowers but not show flowers and perhaps that overused word "cutflower" would apply. I like the words "garden flower" or “ arrangers flower”. Another trait is “reliable” and they always make good tubers that store easily and they always grow well. This one is healthy, tall(5 feet) , productive, pretty in the garden, pretty in a bouquet, good tuber maker. Small BB at 4 inches or less.

I like ones like this...I can pick some, carry them around the garden and find things that combine well with them and create my own house displays. They hold up well for a few days then I can change them out for something else before I get too bored with them. They are not spectacular but give a chance for others to shine also...making a harmonious bouquet.

Third year seedling that Margaret likes. About 4.5 inches in diameter
Note if you see her hand holding the flower stem for the picture that usually means she likes it. If you see my hand I suppose that means I like it but not always.

Delightful! Look how evenly speckled it is! I like the form and size also.
