Juliarugula MissyWeitzel I actually get most of mine at Menards, same as you! Some I also pick up at Costco. Costco used to carry bags of parrot dahlia bulbs, but they haven’t had them the past several years. There are a few that still come back from those bags though. I think my doubles were about half Menards/half Costco.
Teddahlia Calibrachoa has been bred to have double flowers and this one in Margaret's basket is almost blue.
MissyWeitzel Last year I organized a greenhouse crawl and my flower friends and I had so much fun we did it again this year but with matching shirts this time! Here's my haul. I really love the plum cockatoo petunias!
Justafewdahlias MissyWeitzel I love that petunia also! Green & purple is a great flower color combination. I told myself I am done buying plants this season but I will keep an eye out for this one for next year!
calico20hill MissyWeitzel I have those same petunias in the flower boxes that line my front porch! I guess we all like weird color combos!
MissyWeitzel There is an 8 day festival called Tulip Time in early May in Holland, MI. There are all sorts of events, tulips everywhere in the town, klompen dancers, Dutch food, and touristy stuff. I took my mom today and even though some of the tulips were past their prime, we still saw a lot of beautiful ones. We didn't go to the big touristy areas and saw plenty of blooms just walking around downtown and in Centennial park.
calico20hill Indeed, a new climate, a new learning experience and new possiblities...I have treasured childhood memories of the wild flowers that grew in the forests where I grew up and it was only less then 200 miles away (And also on the "Wet" side of the Cascade Mountains), but the soil there were acid peat and very fertile, and now I am on basic clay and much drier summers. I struggle with that.
MissyWeitzel My very first "fancy" iris. My fancy isn't very fancy at all - I think this was a $6 variety. I know nothing about iris(es?) but planted my first 10 this past fall and have another dozen coming this September. It's wonderful to have something new to look forward to after spring bulbs are done. Iris 'Concertina'
SteveM Grape cuttings are something I've always wanted to try but never got around to it. Santiam Nursery ( https://www.etsy.com/shop/SantiamNursery ) was an excellent source for the scions. I ordered 5 scions of Thomcord and they sent 3 extra, all well packed. Seven of the scions rooted so now I have a few months to figure out where I am going to plant them all. Scions after 6 weeks ready to transplant:
Bessie SteveM the grower you link to has so many unusual plants. Such a tempting website😀. Over the years I've grown grapes and they are pretty care free in my climate. The last Concord grape plant I grew(10 years ago?) was big and prosperous, but succumbed to gopher damage.
Teddahlia My "vineyard" has gone wild from neglect. Some grapes are more vigorous growers than others. Do not plant Glenora(seedless grape) unless you are going to cut it back every year. Every few years is a disaster as it goes up to the top of anything near it including apple trees over 20 feet in height. The grapes are pretty tasty but ripen later in the season. It even invades my pot tuber area .
SteveM Bessie the grower you link to has so many unusual plants The owner has a Chinese name and many(most?) of the plants they sell are popular in Japan and China. I was very impressed with the quality and I will be ordering from them again. My Japanese MIL would have loved this site and probably would have ordered one of everything.🙂
SteveM I've been Googling and YouTubing the two methods of pruning grapes. It looks like either method involves heavy pruning during the dormant period to keep the vineyard from becoming a vine yard. With slow growing varieties like Thomcord and Concord the recommended pruning method seems to be "cane pruning". I still have plenty of time to do more research before winter dormancy. @Bessie Everything I grow now is gopher-proofed with hardware cloth. Also, I will probably grow some of these in large containers.
Teddahlia Margaret likes "susan" vines. She had me place her Mothers Day basket between two of them. The calibrachoa plants (Aloha series on tag) like it in the larger pot.
Juliarugula This is my new favorite iris: “TB Beauty Within”. I had completely forgotten I purchased it, and had to do some serious digging to figure out what it is.
