In over 30 years of growing dahlias the most prolific tuber maker we grew, by a far margin, was Puget Sparkle. Nice tubers in prodigious quantities. I asked a commercial grower whether he sold it and he said he tried but found out that everyone already had it and wanted to give it to someone else. He sold almost none when he listed it for sale. Looking back on it we should have used it for breeding as tuber making is a trait we would like to have but of course in a more normal volume. It is a small red somewhat formal decorative flower that would not be considered a show dahlia.

I've been dealing with sprouting tubers, looking at websites that have tubers remaining, and deeply thinking of what Dahlia genetics I want to have included in the seedlings I grow.
Your comment summarizes what I've been thinking... Some varieties of dahlias are so much easier to grow, the hardy tubers just defy the odds, the plants make easy cuttings, and the plants seem "tough" and vigorous. Those traits may to be in the varieties that are still for sale, in abundance, this late in the season.
I'm "done" with nursing to life tubers of "special" hard to acquire varieties. Dahlia growing is so labor intensive that I don't have the physical or mental drive anymore to coddle tubers that have seemingly nice sprouts that refuse to grow. I now look at that tuber(s) and think "yeah, it won a bunch of awards, but it's not generally available because it's a pain to grow."

When you see thousands of seedlings blooming and both of us fall in love with one of them that does not make nice tubers, do you cull it? It just depends on how nice it is and if it is really nice and others think so too, we and most everyone else agree that we will baby it and fight the tuber issue. Yes, we will curse that decision as there never will be enough tubers but sometimes you have to trade ease of growing for a spectacular flower.

We have grown many of these over the years and will remember that nice flower. Kenora Wow is one of them. I think back to the unbelievable flowers it had in our garden. Yes, we were never able to keep even one tuber from it but we got to grow it.
