blown_dry I get that there's no way for all buyers to walk away feeling great. I like some tactics to slow sales better than others. Mystery opens favor people with web alerts and bots. I like lottery opens, VIP/subscriber opens, phased releases and some other methods a bit better. That said, I know supply and demand means some people will always be cranky. In this case it's me. 🙂

Emilyp 😆I feel you. I thought to myself while sitting in the dark this morning “Will I ever do this again, and if so, realistically, how many more years of this do I have in me?” Some existential thoughts blipped through too. Hoping the dahlia craze winds down so we can all go back to not sleeping whenever we don’t want, all on our own.

I actually tried a bot to notify for this sale and it didn’t work :/
I’m very picky about yellow and am having a tough time getting a tuber of one I like (HH HoneyGold looked amazing but also tried hard to find Ryecroft Gold, Irish Gnome). If anyone more tech savvy then me wants to PM me to help trouble shoot, I’d be very appreciative. Unless that’s not cool, then I’ll just feel bad 🙂.

At 6:15am EST, most varieties were still then available and there was no problem "losing" choices already placed in your Cart. Since most (or at least many) sellers are on the West Coast, shopping at crazy hours is standard practice for Easterners who seek West Coast originations etc. There is no easy solution, as tuber scarcity is the underlying cause of the problem.. However, if all sales were held in the early afternoon the time difference would not cause buyers on the opposite coast to lose sleep.

I think this is more true than many want to admit, "then some people would find it kind of boring and wander off to find a unicorn to pursue."

I woke up this morning and laid in bed a bit before I remembered and jumped up to check. It was 5:30am est. I missed HH Honeygold, but satisfied my craving for orange with an impulsive purchase of Cleo Laine.

Well, Connells is scheduled to reopen with new stock while I am at a dental cleaning today. It never seems to fail with these last minute announced openings. I really don't leave home that much.

I started out with Connell dahlias and knew the Connells well through dahlia club activities and meetings. I buy a fair number of their tubers every year. Maybe not this year unless they have a really large supply. I am not really short of tubers but I do enjoy trying new ones.

I got the dental cleaning done and got home and was still able to make a nice order to Connell's. That felt good.

I will be on the selling side this weekend and am nervous. My first sale since getting a nursery business license.

Filtering on availability and setting item quantity tier shipping is not easy, maybe not possible, on Squaresite. And a fair number of my varieties only have a quantity of 1 available. (Should I make a few variety bundles for sale with those? I don't know.) I would also like to figure out, for future sales, what platforms are allowing you to effectively reserve items in your cart.

All questions for next year, probably. Need to launch sometime. Very excited to make some people happy and inevitably disappoint others. (:

I just noticed Old House Gardens stocked Jocondo and Requiem, both of which look very pretty.

Y'all probably know this but there are two. It's not like Highlander. Old House Dahlias and Old House Gardens. I guess OHD gets customer service calls for OHG and probably the reverse.

Old House Dahlias is owned by Mark Harvey who started selling dahlias in the 1990s from his old house in SE Portland. He sold so many he rented some farmland and then sold enough flowers to buy 13 acres in Tillamook, Oregon. He still sells lots of cut flowers and now sells lots of tubers too.

Old House gardens has always specialized in heirloom plants and has sold really old dahlia varieties. They may not grow their own stock as I am aware of a grower who contracted to grow tubers for them. It is sort of like apples and oranges as Mark Harvey sells many, modern varieties and lots of cut flower varieties too as he is an expert cut flower grower. Old house gardens specializes in really old heirloom plants and may still sell the oldest variety still grown called York and Lancaster from the 1830s.

Of course the big open today was Stonehouse and Kristine Albrecht's new releases but I didn't shop that sale. I did shop Old House Gardens and some other smaller sites. Was really happy to get Chimacum Cathleen since waterlily fever is on this year.

I skipped the battle field but I am betting I can get cuttings from my neighbor. She is young enough to fight for them...and she is also into propagating through cuttings.

I partook in the Stonehouse sale with some help from my 16yo son. I got my number one (KAs Chiffon) which I knew wasn’t a very popular one compared to the others. I missed my number two which I figured I probably would because it seemed to be the one everyone was after ( KAs Cinder Rose). I also got some of the others. Including 3 KAs Pearl which was by accident when my 16yo son placed the order not knowing I did too because he yelled out that he missed out on it. Ooops. I’ll shop the next sale and try for Cinder Rose again. And, maybe be able to trade a Pearl with someone. 🤞🏻

DarcyD KA's Chiffon is the only one I am interested in. Vase life shmase life amiright? lol I didn't make the sale this morning, but I am going to try for that one in one of their regular sales.

I rationalized I would wait a year to see if the new KA intros were good tuber makers. Plus I don’t have experience with cuttings so decided not to figure it out on a $45 thing
