We haven't had a real freeze here yet. Starting to wonder... Anyway, tender stuff like this flowering maple and Mexican bush sage is partying like it's 1999....

Salt and mayo and a giant German Yellow Stripe tomato. First time we ever grew this one. It is really tasty and mild. Edit: Margaret says it is a new one called Chef's Choice.

Teddahlia yum - that looks like a good one! I haven’t ever grown it. This year I grew my favorite Rebel Yell, Sungold (which is always a slam dunk), Black from Tula (which was tasty but only produced a few fruit), Early Girl, and Black and Red Striped Boar. Black and Red Striped Boar was incredible and is going to take the place of Early Girl for me next year. It set so many fruit it pulled the cage down (and I use pretty serious cages) and then just kept on going. It was delicious, early, and productive. Once the other plants got sad and had to be pulled, it was sprouting new gorgeous foliage, so I cut back old stems and it’s back to setting new fruit. Very impressed!

Juliarugula I’ve never heard of black & red striped boar but I’m going to get some seed based off your description & review. That’s the kinda tomato I need in my life!

Pumpkins are pumpkining! This is the first time I’ve had enough room to grow this many or to grow the bigger ones (have always just done Sugar Pie on a trellis) and seeing all these sprawling vines everywhere makes my heart sing. They’re crawling up & over the beds on the other side, too, and I love it.

Picture of our "curve" where we plant lots of flowers other than dahlias. It was bare dirt on August 1st and we finished planting it on August 6th. The pink dahlia on the end is HH Minuet that is planted in a
large pot but never staked up or disbudded or deadheaded. It always has nice flowers and would be a nice plant in any garden.

calico20hill Ummmmm, I ordered 10 iris and they have arrived. I do not know where they are going to go but I have them in gallon pots now. It was the illusive memory of their fragrance that sucked me in....

People over the years have gifted iris roots to us. We are dahlia snobs and iris are not on our list of favorite flowers. I tossed the iris roots onto the ground in an obscure area near the neighbors fence and in half shade. They have never been watered. The naturalize very easily and every year bloom just fine. I tossed another batch of freebies in there a month ago and I bet they too will grow without any care.
On the side of "we like iris in somebody else's garden": The Schreiners Iris farms' display garden is beyond belief but not for the iris that are there too. They grow anything exciting that blooms at the same time as the iris and that is worth seeing. Poppies are unbelievable. The garden was free for many years but now they charge and we have not been back. Maybe next year as Margret's sister lives a
couple of miles from there.

I am not a dahlia snob. The thing is, I love them all and want everything that flowers and I want it in every color it comes in, and if there are different fragrances I want those too! I do not have "staff". I am trying to simplify for ease of maintanance.But I still want them all...

I received my Baker Creek seed catalog in the mail today (the free one). I am looking forward to adding more interesting seeds I may or may not grow someday to my seed box.

These petunias are really cool!

I grew similar petunias from them this year and they were wonderful! Mine are still blooming on the porch.

My fave destination nursery, Annie's Annuals, closed abruptly. It felt like a friend had passed away. It's been a big influence on my garden journey and part of my life for many years. It was sold a few years ago to someone who turned out to be a poor steward, to say the least. Anyway! Good news, it was revived by long-time employees as Curious Flora. I was able to do my usual fall road trip and support them.

And I visited a new place, the Morningsun Herb Farm. This is two different varieties of basil hybrid in their demonstration gardens. They were huge, 5+ feet tall, and smelled amazing, and thoroughly gave me zone envy.

blown_dry I looove that succulent planter! I’ve never purchased from Annie’s Annuals, but I’ve heard so many good things about them over the years. I’m glad they’re in new (old) hands!

Oh what a fabulous road trip! I’ve been garden-dreaming pretty aggressively lately and thinking of end capping dahlia beds with clustered, tall, companion plants that will be good to work into arrangements too. I have zone envy too now, these would be glorious!

Margaret used to order seeds from Annie's. I live in the past, and when seed catalogs ruled the world, (late 60s?)there was an English company called Thompson and Morgan. They sold seeds of things that even Botanists had never heard of. I ordered from them once and primarily for some of their tomato varieties(that were not so good) . If they were around these days, they would be very profitable as people want the "unusual".

Teddahlia I used to love the T&M catalog. They are still going as far as I know, but they are British based and at some point they put their US operations under different management and they were greatly reduced and maybe now they are ended, but they used to have a very cool catalog.
