Frost Nip & Holland Festival

Has anyone grown both? They look very similar in pictures.

I have grown HF and seen Frost Nip. I love HF a lot. HF seems to have an orange center that blends to hot pink toward the tips which bleeds into the white.

Frost Nip (below) seems the opposite. It's rosy toward the sides and bloom center and more orange by the tips.

The petal shape seems different to me too. HF pointier and more dense. FN broader, less tapered. Looking at pics makes me want to grow Frost Nip this year too.

I ordered HF and can’t wait to see it in person! It looks absolutely beautiful - that’s a gorgeous photo. It would be really fun to grow them both for comparison.

Holland Festival came to me as a mislabel several years ago. Unfortunately, it was a one-hit-wonder.
I loved it though and would definitely grow it again.

AndreaB did it only make one bloom, or only made it one season?

KitCMC Just one season! From what I remember, it was pretty floriferous.

AndreaB Floriferous is good! Sometimes those AA & A sizes only make a bloom or two before frost. I had a Sir Alf Ramsey last season that I never got to see in full bloom.

KitCMC I think it’s more of a mid-season bloomer.
With our early frost last year, I had 30+ that never bloomed. But, I also didn’t start the A’s or AA’s early (like I normally do). Live and learn.

I saw a really nice Frost Nip at a show entered by Harold Ayers who bred dahlias too. His Ayers Glory is is a really nice giant dahlia. He is no longer growing dahlias because of health issues. He could hear the lions roaring at night that were at the Winston Wildlife Safari about a mile from his house. They never talk about animals escaping but if I lived that close, I would invest in a nice tall fence. Yes, he knew of some escapes.

This makes me want to grow it even more. Hopefully I can find a tuber. I wonder if Mr. Ayers suffered from fewer deer & rodents because of his vocal neighbors 😉

Passed up a Dutch import Frost Nip at my local garden store today. It was tough, but it’s just so likely to have gall.
Dreamland Flower Farm is restocking tomorrow and Frost Nip could be available. Finger crossed.

i've only grown frost nip, one year, and lost the tubers over the winter. have ordered in several tubers for this year, and hope to have more success overwintering. the blooms were so stunning! glitter-y in the sun, wavy and voluptuous! Can't wait to see if the stock i get this year is as nice...fingers crossed!
