Ah! Misplacing a whole clump - I hope it turns up, Julia!
I’m bracing myself for digging the varieties that are known for low/zero tuber production. Also for disappointment from discovering new-to-me low/zero tuber producers!
This is the first year I’ll be storing this many tubers (80-90 plants) which I know is much less than most folks here. Haven’t fully decided on a method yet so I’m happy for the start of this discussion to *listen in on what others plan to do.
Coarse vermiculite in plastic tubs worked well last year, but I lost some because I didn’t check them often enough. The lost tubers actually shriveled from being too dry which I wasn’t anticipating here in the PNW. I hear SI recommends moistening the vermiculite before storing which is something I didn’t do last year and am considering. I’ll definitely be checking more often and spritzing/airing out when necessary.
I love the idea of storing as whole clumps with dirt left on - not sure if that generally works for the whole winter though? I don’t love the idea of being outside in February washing and dividing clumps to save them.
Also, not sure if rats will munch on them if stored outside of plastic containers? Urban Seattle is full of Norwegian rats (blech!) and they’re frequent visitors of our crawl space which is where the tubers go in the winter.
