A change in color preference?

My former flower selling partner was able to enjoy the first days of the Dahlia SHow with me. Among our many topics of conversation were "What is selling at your flower stand this year?

She says...any thing yellow, orange or red! What?!!! This is a first in all the years we have been selling! She says anything pink will sit on the stand until she picks up in the evening.

I wonder if that is happening for other sellers or whether is is an (Vashon) Island thing?

In this case my little yellow Salish Sundrops may have its day! I sent tubers of this to Triple Wren last winter. It is blooming better then ever for me this year. Its tall with nice long strong stems. Probably about a 4" flower. Its name is Salish Sundrops. It is prolific and healthy.

Teddahlia if someone is buying a bouquet of flowers with that orange waterlily in it, let's just say they will get their money's worth in terms of color impact. Years ago I made a fall bouquet of large zinnias, that as I remember, included orange, gold, burgundy, and salmon . It was a really rich color palette. Perhaps think of that orange as "rich color", and not florescent orange?😅

I wonder if maybe it has something to do with the season. It really is starting to feel like fall!

The reason never mattered when I was selling. Not where yellow was concerned/. I tried with the softer yellows in early summer, and the more golden yellows in the fall. My friend says it doesn't seem to vary this year from season to season. Golden yellow, Ooange and red are selling well all the time. I wonder if it isn't maybe one person who buys a lot of $5 bouquets and then makes them into a massive one each week.

calico20hill to each their own. This is an older thread but Yellow is my favorite dahlia color! I love your Salish Sundrop since I like the clean lemony yellows or the soft yellow, which go with everything.

I have always loved the 'hot' color jewel tones, and anything salmon or peach. Dark purples (if there were such a thing anymore - stock is wildly variable and I usually end up with more magenta-purple, even with Thos. Edison) and black-reds make a nice impact and look great with these colors.

I have grown to love pinks and a few of what I term 'muddy' colors or what I call "victorian' colors - like Senior Hope - but not many.

I wonder if these colors are still trending in 2025. Ted, I love that bright scarlet dahlia you posted. Did you keep it? Is it named?

There seems to have always been a difference in what sells at the market and what sells at a flower stand. Flower stands sell cheery, bright bouquets and flower markets sell serious, subdued arrangements. The flowers that people want for their wedding are not the same as the flowers they want on their kitchen table.

Ted, I love that bright scarlet dahlia you posted. Did you keep it? We did keep one that had bi more yellow in the flame and may be this one. 6 feet tall and strong grower and bright flowers.
