There are not enough named varieties that make seeds and good seedlings. Over the years we have bred quite a few unreleased varieties that have good form and make viable seeds. They are wonderful to use for breeding as dahlia breeding requires numerous seedlings even for the best crosses and we are almost guaranteed getting lots of seedlings. The very best one for seed production (a small "A" sized flower at about 8.5 inches) was good enough for a portrait picture of Margaret and the flower when it was a first year seedling. I still remember counting the seeds from it's best pod and getting 122 seeds. We have been growing it's seedlings with some successes.
